Is my credit card information safe during on-line registration?

The Short Answer:
Yes.
Thanks.

The Full Story:
Some of our customers have asked if credit card transactions processed through our site use encryption technology to keep their credit card information safe. (“Encryption technology”? If your eyes are already glazing over, please feel free to re-read The Short Answer, above, which is what I would do... Read on for a complete explanation).

Anywhere you go on the web it’s easy to tell the difference between a site that use encryption technology to keep your personal information safe and a regular site that does not use encryption:

Regular web addresses start with this:

http:

Encrypted site addresses start with this:

https:
(Note that extra “s” at the end.

You will also often see a picture of a little padlock at the far end of the address on an encrypted site.

That special encrypted address is usually saved for the web pages where you actually pay money. For example, if you shop at Amazon.com, you will see regular http web pages until you click on the Checkout button, and then the rest of the pages will be the special encrypted https type with that picture of the little padlock.

SO... how come our web pages don’t show that special https designation?

Good question.

We use a special web tool called “masking.”

The following information is true for ALL of our rides, but let’s use our Ride to Montauk as an example:

If you are checking out our Ride to Montauk web site, at the top of every single page on that site you’ll see this as the web address:

http://www.ridetomontauk.com

For example, if you are on our Ride to Montauk home page, you will see this:

http://www.ridetomontauk.com

But you will actually be here:

http://www.nycbicycleshow.com/Montauk%2008/Home%20Page.html

When you go to the page about our Montauk bike jerseys you SEE this:

http://www.ridetomontauk.com

but you are actually here:

http://www.nycbicycleshow.com/Montauk%2008/Jerseys,%20T-shirts,%20%26%20Socks.html

Why do we do this?

Well, because when we are telling people about our cool rides, it's a lot easier to say:

"Check us out at www.ridetomontauk.com"

instead of saying,

"Check us out at http://www.nycbicycleshow.com/Montauk%2008/Home%20Page.html"

SO... when you click on the Register Now button anywhere on our Ride to Montauk web site, it takes you to Active.com -- the company that handles our on-line registration. When you get to the second page of on-line registration for Montauk you SEE this:

http://www.ridetomontauk.com

but where you actually are is here:

https://www.active.com/login.cfm?eventId=1502496&showSkip=1&header=registration&showJoin=0&returnTo=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eactive%2Ecom%2Fregister%2Findex%2Ecfm%3Fevent%5Fid%3D1502496%26site%3Dheader

Note that

https

at the front of that LONG web address, which tells you that this is an encrypted page.

Here's a simple way to put your mind at ease, which you certainly deserve:

Instead of going to www.ridetomontauk.com to sign up for the ride, go here first:

http://www.nycbicycleshow.com/Montauk%2008/Home%20Page.html

You are now off of the masking system -- feel free to visit anywhere on the web site, and you will see the true web address at the top of each page.

When you click on the Register Now with Active.com button you'll see the real web addresses of Active.com at the top of your screen.

When you get to the part of on-line registration where it actually asks you for personal information and credit card numbers (the second or third screen in), you’ll see that secure encrypted https designation and the little picture of a padlock at the top of your screen.

Interested in our other events? Here are the true web addresses of their home pages:

The North Fork Century 2008

The Farm Ride 2008
http://www.nycbicycleshow.com/Farm%20RIde%202008/Home%20Page.html

Clear as mud? You bet.

Please feel free to get in touch with any questions or concerns -- always glad to hear from you.
