For those of you who are new to the North Fork ride, welcome!  This is a wonderful event with beautiful flat riding past vineyards and farms. You won’t find a nicer bunch of people anywhere.

If you are pedaling with us on the North Fork again, here’s what’s new for 2008.

Thanks to all of your excellent suggestions, together we’re getting pretty good at this North Fork thing, so there aren’t as many changes this year as in the past. We’ll make a couple improvements this year, but mostly we promise to keep doing things the way you like them!

That means that spectacular riding on quiet roads will be back, Briermere Farms pie with whipped cream made from scratch on the spot will be back, incredible scenery will be back, ice cream will be back, S.A.G. on Demand will be back, Long Island corn on the cob will be back...

BUT...

  1. We’re upgrading our optional transportation from Manhattan to the ride. There will now be three scheduled departures heading home after the ride:

  1. 1:00 p.m.
  2.
  3. 4:00 p.m.
  4.
  5. 7:00 p.m.
  6.
  7. We use charter buses and 15-passenger vans for transportation -- this gives us the best flexibility to take you where you want to go, when you want to go there.  However, some of our riders told us that even though the vans do indeed have 15 seats, it’s a bit tight when you fill those 15 seats with 15 people.
  8.
  9. SO... moving forward we will put no more than 11 people in the 15-passenger vans so you have more room to spread out.
  10.
  11. The exception to this rule is if a tidal wave is headed our way and we have to S.A.G. EVERYONE off of the route in the middle of the ride, in which case we will tie people to the hoods of the vans if we have to. I once saw the legendary Paul Curly put 17 bikes in to a REFRIGERATED TRUCK because it HAD TO BE DONE.
  12.
  13. Morning check in at Greenport will now start at 7 a.m.  Complete details on where to be and when can be found here and in the email we send you just before the ride.
  14.
  15. I am proud to say that our good friends from Team in Training will be riding with us this year.  They are fun to have around, they kick ass, they raise money for a great cause, AND they bring you the opportunity to do the North Fork Century for free.  All the details here.
  16.
  17. We’ve added a 25-mile version of the route -- perfect for those who are knew to long-distance riding, bringing the kids along, or just want a more relaxed day.  The 25-mile riders will be doing the most beautiful portion of the route -- Orient Point.
  18.
  19. We’ll still have our free all-you-can-eat post-ride meal at the finish line, prepared again by the Greenport Fire Department.  Last year some of you said that you wanted more beverage choices at the end, including soda, so that’s what we’ll do.
  20.
  21. As always, I have few tricks up my sleeve which I’m not ready to talk about just yet.  Stay tuned!
