The Ride
Discover Long Island is a family-friendly bicycle ride that moves at a relaxed pace - it is NOT a race!

This is a truly rare opportunity - the Wantagh State Parkway will be CLOSED to auto traffic during the ride from our start point at Eisenhower Park all the way down to the Atlantic Ocean and back! Imagine riding your bike on a four-lane freeway with NO cars! The views are incredible as we pass over East Bay and through marshland that you may never notice from a car.

The route is 30 miles long, but there are official detours for those who prefer a shorter trip. For expert cyclists, you can do more than one 30-mile lap!

Along the route we'll be there with free refreshments, bike repair, and first-aid. If you're too tired to go on, our expert S.A.G. service will make sure that you and your bicycle make it back to the start line safely.

The Sponsors & The Cause
The ride is a fund-raiser for Nassau County Parks - your ride fee helps keep Nassau County Parks great! Thanks to our sponsors for making it all happen:

  • Terra Chips
  • The Nassau County Sports Entertainment and Tourism Commission (SET)
  • The New York Department of Transportation
  • New York State Police
  • Bicycle Shows U.S.
Where Does the Ride Start?
The start/finish line is at Nassau County's Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, NY. There's plenty of free parking, or you can take the Long Island Rail Road to the Wantagh
Station - it's a very short bike ride from there. We'll mark the bike route from the train to the start so you'll have no trouble finding the ride.

The Day of the Ride
Here's a brief look at the day of the ride - complete details below. Please note that unusual weather, delayed trains, etc. could alter this time schedule. Note that we ride rain or shine! (But it won't rain!)

7:00 a.m - Check in begins at Eisenhower Park. Please do NOT arrive earlier - we won't be ready to assist you.

8:00 a.m. -- The ride starts at Eisenhower Park! The route is 30-miles long, with some official detours for those who would prefer a shorter ride. Expert riders can do more than one 30-mile lap.

8:30 a.m. - Registration ends.

11 a.m. - This is the last time those who want to do more than one lap of the course can start an additional 30-mile lap.

2:00 p.m - All cyclists MUST be off the parkway, so it can be reopened to auto traffic. Our expert S.A.G. team and the NY State Police will ensure that everyone is off the road safely.

What Should I Bring to the Ride?
- Bicycle Helmet. This is MANDATORY! No helmet/no ride! This will be STRICTLY enforced!
- TWO water bottles.
- Spare inner tube
- Pump
- Tire patch kit
- Wrench to remove your wheel (if it's not a quick release)
(NOTE: Even if you don't know how to fix a flat, someone else can help you… but only if you have the tools and parts you'll need with you!)
- Money (for emergencies)

What Should I NOT Bring to the Ride?
- A lock - we always see someone pedaling with a 20 pound lock on their bike. That doesn't mean that you should leave your bike unguarded - it DOES mean that you can probably get someone to watch it for a moment while you duck in somewhere.

Still Have Questions?
Are you sure? Most of the questions we get are for stuff that is explained above, but if you still have questions, drop a note!
