Get ready for an amazing ride! In the freezing cold slush of winter we'll be pedaling where it's warm, flat, and fun, from Miami all the way to Mile Zero -- Key West, Florida.
Complete details follow, but here's the short version:
Drop off your bike and luggage up to a week in advance. We have a top bike shop picked out in each city where you can drop off your stuff. (Prefer to transport your bike another way? No problem-o! We can help.)
AND... want a little more sunny vacation time in winter? We can arrange for you to check in to Miami a couple days early or stay longer in Key West if you prefer. Just let us know).
Wednesday November 28th
Fly into Miami International Airport. You pick the flight/airline/time that's best for you.
Welome to Florida! We already have your bike and your luggage -- safe and sound.
Hang out at our official hotel -- we'll meet you by the rooftop pool. Let us buy you a drink and a snack. Relax!
In the evening we'll head out on a very short relaxed ride (about five miles each way) through Miami's art district for a fun dinner where the locals eat at Wynwood Yards -- hand-picked culinary concepts, a pop-up bar, and an edible garden all anchored within a vibrant outdoor setting. (Trust me, you're going to love it! I was there and knew immediately that we were NOT going to be stuck eating some boring hotel banquet!)
As always, plenty of choices for meat eaters and vegetarians. Don't want to pedal? We are happy to give you a lift.
No-car bike path -- the ride out of Miami
We'll wind up in Homestead, FL where we'll have a cold drink waiting for you by the pool. In the evening we'll head off property for a great local dinner together to celebrate our first day of riding.
Friday November 30th
NOW THEN... at this point in the adventure we join up with a terrific crew -- the Everglades Bicycle Club. When I started to plan this Miami to Key West ride I found out that they are already THE experts on the topic -- why reinvent the (bicycle) wheel? They put on a fantastic fully-supported event (we've just added on a few incredible perks for you that no one else gets!)
Today we'll pedal from Homestead to Duck Key -- still incredibly flat with a few modest rises as we cross the causeways. Distance is about 79 miles. VITAL! THIS IS WHERE TRAVELING WITH US MAKES THE DIFFERENCE! Want to pedal less than 79 miles? Got you covered! If you wish we will zoom you forward with your bike to one of the rest stops and you can pedal the mileage that's just right for you! Would you rather ride 58 miles? 39 miles? 22? Your choice! The Everglades Bicycle Club is amazing, but this is NOT a service they offer -- it's only available when you hang out with us!
At the end of today's ride luggage pick-up is usually in the parking lot of the hotel (in a large pile of a lot of OTHER bags!), BUT... we've arranged for your bags to be put directly into your room so they are waiting for you when you arrive. Cool, right?
Lots of snacks right after the ride and a cold drink or two. We'll be headed to a great dinner just a bit later after you've had a chance to relax.
Saturday December 1st
On to Key West! Today's ride is about 62 miles. Rather ride something a bit shorter? How about 50 miles? 40? 30? 20? Sure! We are here to serve! (The bike club does NOT offer this service, but we do!) Happy to zoom you ahead, as you wish.
We all gather at a park four miles from the finish, where we will get a police escort into town. (Yes, really!)
Everyone winds up at a big blast of a pool party, with lunch, right on the water in the old-town section of Key West. '
NOW THEN... afer everyone has had a drink or three at the pool party, the folks from the bike club need to make a U-turn and pedal BACK three miles to their hotel. NOT US! We are staying at a luxury hotel just one block from the post-ride party!
In the evening we'll head off-property to a great local Key West dinner. (No tourist traps allowed! We eat where the locals eat.)
Sunday December 2nd
Alas, it's back to reality! Departure day. If you want to stay extra days in Key West just let us know -- happy to help.
The bike truck will load up in the morning and depart by noon for the trip all the way back north. We'll take your bike fully assembled -- no packing, no shipping, no bike box needed, and we can take your luggage too if you wish.
We'll let you know which date your bike and luggage will be back at the designated bike shop in your city. You'll have a couple grace days after that to retrieve your stuff.
Now that your bike is taken care of, let's talk about getting YOU home! We recommend that you book your return flight to leave for home directly from Key West airport. Faster and easier than the other choices. (If you really want to go overland all the way back to Miami we will help, but we don't recommend it!)
Back to winter weather, but with great memories of pedaling Miami to Key West.
While we're on the topic -- we have a lot of great activities planned all week, but this is YOUR vacation. Don't want to attend a meal? Skip it! Rather head your own way? Sure!
Thursday November 29th
We ride! We'll have a light breakfast and then hit the road.
A pro mechanic will be on duty before we head out to take care of any last-minute tweaking.
It's about 40 VERY flat miles today along back roads and some really cool no-car bike paths. We ride through beautiful neighborhoods and the lush backroads filled with palm trees and fields.
BUT... every day we offer a very cool service -- don't want to pedal the entire distance? We can zoom you ahead in our fleet of vehicles and save you some miles if you wish. No need to decide in advance -- you can tell us the morning of the ride what you prefer.
